CORAL RESTORATION

We work in coral reef conservation in Baja California Sur, Mexico.

Coral reefs are one of the most important ecosystems on our planet. They provide habitat for approximately one-quarter of the ocean’s marine biodiversity and play a crucial role in producing much of the oxygen we breathe.

They provide essential ecosystem services such as food production, coastal protection, and economic opportunities through fisheries and tourism.

Coral reefs cover only 0.17% of the ocean, yet they are highly productive and play a crucial role in capturing carbon dioxide (CO₂). Their function is essential to both local and global economies.

However, hurricanes, global warming, pollution, overfishing, and coastal development have severely impacted these ecosystems.

It is estimated that 500 million people worldwide directly rely on coral reefs for coastal protection, sustaining local fish populations, and attracting tourism.

EA

Pocillopora

Through fragmentation techniques, we have successfully planted 14,306 colonies of hard coral from the Pocillopora genus, making this the most significant restoration effort in the Mexican Pacific.

Today, our nursery holds new growing colonies, ready to be transplanted into restoration sites in Bahía de La Paz.

EA

Pavona gigantea.

We are currently developing a restoration methodology for the coral species Pavona gigantea. We are conducting studies and tests to determine the most effective method for its restoration in Bahía de La Paz.

Coral restoration is essential for the health of our oceans. Coral reefs provide habitat for approximately one-quarter of marine biodiversity and play a crucial role in producing much of the oxygen we breathe. They also offer vital ecosystem services, such as carbon sequestration, which is key in addressing the current climate crisis.
